9 Key Points of Louise Hay's Philosophy
by Nancy Hearn, CNC
Q: I believe in holistic healing and that we can heal ourselves, just like we poison ourselves. I truly admire Louise Hay and am motivated by her absolute knowing. What can you offer in that realm?
A: For those who of you who may not have heard of Louise Hay, she is a metaphysical lecturer and teacher and bestselling author of 27 or more books. Hay has assisted thousands of people in discovering and using the full potential of their own creative powers for personal growth and self-healing.
The following are nine key points of Hay's philosophy:
• We are each responsible for all of our experiences.
• Every thought we think is creating our future.
• It’s only a thought, and a thought can be changed.
• The point of power is always in the present moment.
• The bottom line issue for everyone is “I’m not good enough.”
• Resentment, criticism, and guilt are the most damaging patterns.
• We must release the past and forgive everyone.
• Self-acceptance in the now is the key to positive change.
• When we really love ourselves, everything in our life works.
We Create Our Experiences and Our Future
In her book You Can Heal Your Life, Hay writes: “Life is very simple. What we give out, we get back. I believe that everyone, myself included, is responsible for every experience in our lives, the best and the worst. Every thought we think is creating our future. Each one of us creates our experiences by the thoughts we think and the words we speak and the beliefs we hold.
“Beliefs are ideas and thoughts that we accept as truth. What we think about ourselves and the world becomes true for us. . . . What we choose to believe can expand and enrich our world. Each day can be an exciting, joyous, hopeful experience--or a sorrowful, limiting, and painful one.
“Two people living in the same world, with the same set of circumstances can experience life so differently. What can transport us from one world to another? I’m convinced that it’s our beliefs that do so. When we’re willing to change our primary belief structures, then we may experience a true change in our lives.”
The Biology of Belief
Like Hay, many other scientists, doctors, and health practitioners are now well aware of the power of thoughts and beliefs and how they affect us physically and emotionally. In a new book called The Biology of Belief, Dr. Bruce Lipton examines in great detail the processes by which cells receive information. Dr. Lipton’s synthesis of the latest and best research in cell biology and quantum physics is a major breakthrough, showing that our bodies can be changed as we retrain our thinking. (More to come on Dr. Lipton’s work in future articles.)
Hay is considered a pioneer in the field of self-healing because she was able to observe how conditioned thoughts and beliefs actually affect different parts of the body and physical ailments. Not only was she an astute listener and observer with her clients, she learned how she had unknowingly created dis-ease in her own body and started to take full responsibility.
A Stiff Neck Mentality
For example, in Heal Your Body A-Z, Hay writes: “I could not understand why I repeatedly had problems with a stiff neck. Then I discovered that the neck represented being flexible on issues, being willing to see different sides of a question. I had been a very inflexible person, often refusing to listen to another side of a question out of fear. However, as I became more flexible in my thinking and was more able, with loving understanding, to see another’s viewpoint, my neck ceased to bother me. Now, if my neck becomes a bit stiff, I look to see where my thinking is stiff and rigid.”
